St. Catherine’s Nursing Home
Victorious at 2009 Suffolk County Golden Games
Smithtown, New York - Residents from St.
Catherine of Siena Nursing Home participated in the 2009 Suffolk
County Golden Games on Friday, May 15, at St. Joseph’s College.
The Golden Games is an all-day athletic competition for Suffolk
County Senior Citizens, founded in 1989 by Karen Nash, CTS,
Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric
Center. The events are to enhance public awareness of therapeutic
recreation programs and services, and expand recreation and
leisure opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Teams representing 14 nursing homes throughout Suffolk County,
including St. Catherine’s Nursing Home residents, participated
in physical events such as wheelchair relay, distant throw,
darts, volleyball and bowling tournaments. It was the first
year St. Catherine’s Nursing Home residents participated and
it proved to be a triumphant beginning, as Anna Monahan came
home with the Bronze Medal in the distance throw tournament.
The residents look forward to participating again next year.
