St. Catherine’s Nursing Home
Held A Wedding Affair of 65 years to Remember
Smithtown,
New York - As June is the traditional wedding month,
the Therapeutic Recreation Department at St. Catherine of
Siena Nursing Home hosted a special wedding ceremony on Thursday,
June 18th. It was a vow renewal for a couple currently residing
at the Nursing Home, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Sganga. The couple
recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May
14, 2009 and the vow renewal was perfectly fitting for such
a momentous occasion.
Father Fred of St. Catherine’s Pastoral Department
officiated a warm wedding ceremony on the grounds at St. Catherine’s
Nursing Home, where he advised the two lovebirds to continue
practicing love and patience with one another.
The Therapeutic Recreation staff created the most beautiful
atmosphere with no wedding details overlooked. James Cress
Florist of Smithtown donated the bride’s bouquet, the
grooms boutonniere, and flowers for the tabletops. SalVito’s
Bakery of Copiague donated a three-tier cake for all the residents
to enjoy and St. Catherine’s Nursing Home Chef Dan Erwin
and Director of Food Services Tina Labozzetta created the
most decedent desserts including a chocolate fountain.
About the Couple:
Anthony was on the train going to work with one of his friends.
His friend leaned over and said "There's my cousin Lena
over in the next car". Anthony looked up from the sports
section of the newspaper, glanced over and quickly looked
back down. The next day he's friend pointed out his cousin
again. Once again, Anthony looked up from the newspaper and
looked over at Lena. He said " I saw her blue eyes and
that was it; I never bought another newspaper on the
train again". They took the train together to and from
work everyday and began dating. They worked at the same plant;
he was on the first floor and she was on the second. The
Proposal: He took her out on a date and he looked
over at her and said "I admire you, I love you"
and asked Lena to marry him. They were married on May 14,
1944 while he was in the service. They have 4 daughters, 10
grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
After renewing their vows, the couple danced to a heartfelt
song performed by a Therapeutic Recreation staff member. They
then cut the cake and toasted to many more years together.
The happy groom, Mr. Sganga stated, “This is amazing,
they really went all out”.
The event also highlighted wedding photos of other nursing
home residents. It was a great occasion for the couple, residents,
family members and staff.
